Mining titan BHP on Tuesday revealed that it had paid $9.1-billion to its host governments in the 2019 financial year, through taxes, royalties and other payments. In its economic contribution report, the miner noted that 78.7% of this payment, amounting to $7.1-billion, was paid in Australia.

Coal miner New Hope Group has started the process of reducing 150 staff at its New Acland mine, in Queensland, as the company continued to await approval for the Stage 3 expansion. New Acland General Manager Dave O’Dwyer said the difficult process of notifying the individual workers started Monday afternoon, with New Acland management holding one-on-one meetings with staff.

Federal Resources Minister Matt Canavan on Tuesday officially opened the ten-million tonne a year Byerwen coking coal mine, in Queensland. The A$1.76-billion mine is a joint venture between the QCoal Group and JFE Steel, with the coal produced at Byerwen targeted for exports.

Eskom Holdings, the State-owned South African power utility with about $30-billion of debt, sought advisers on how to implement a government bailout seven months after President Cyril Ramaphosa said the company would be reorganised. Eskom issued an invitation to tender for “financial services for implementation for government support package” on Aug. 23, according to a document seen by Bloomberg. The tender, which closed on September 3, requires that the team provide its record in “providing holistic solutions to restore the viability of companies in financial distress for transaction values in excess of $1-billion.”

A plan to establish the world’s largest green-energy financing initiative is being threshed out in South Africa, which needs to reduce its environmental footprint and find innovative ways to fund debt-stricken state power utility Eskom Holdings. The plan being formulated by Meridian Economics, a Cape Town-based think tank, is under consideration by the government. It envisions the establishment of an $11-billion facility backed by development finance institutions and private funders. The new entity would lend money to Eskom at slightly below commercial rates on condition it accelerates the closure of polluting coal plants to make way for renewable energy.

A nickel mining hub in the southern Philippines, which produces mostly high-grade material, has suspended extraction operations indefinitely as the regional government conducts an industry audit, a top government official told Reuters on Monday. The government of Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has suspended operations of all four mining companies in its jurisdiction, said Environment, Natural Resources and Energy Minister Abdulraof Abdul Macacua.

The Brazilian state of Minas Gerais has signed a protocol of intent with Sul Americana de Metais, a unit of Chinese miner Honbridge, for the construction of a 9.1-billion reais ($2.2-billion) mining complex, newspaper O Estado de Sao Paulo reported on Saturday. The agreement, signed on Thursday, will include the construction of a 845-million square meters tailing dam, which will be one of the largest in Brazil, according to the report.

Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe says he expects the long-awaited update to the Integrate Resource Plan (IRP) to be considerer for approval by Cabinet at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday September 18. The IRP has not been updated since the IRP2010 was officially approved as the country’s generation roadmap in early 2011, despite two previous attempts to do so.

Indonesia, which is weighing an early ban on exports of bauxite and copper concentrates, is betting on Chinese companies to add to the billions of dollars of investment in building smelters and processing plants. Making a deal with China is "simple", as the country "is willing to meet any request from us," said Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, who also oversees mining.

Many have dreamed about being able to replace oil and natural gas with hydrogen, but limiting factors have been been the cost of production and safety issues. Now, widespread sun and wind power use as well as liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) advances are sweeping these issues aside to make hydrogen's $1/litre, or $4/gallon, cost competitive with petrol.
