Russian gold and silver producer Polymetal's biggest shareholder has raised £342-million from the sale of a 4% stake in the company through an accelerated book building (ABB), a bookrunner said on Friday. IST Group, owned by businessman Alexander Nesis, sold 19-million shares in Polymetal, it added. It is the fifth ABB by Polymetal shareholders this year, analysts at Sova Capital said in a note.

Glencore’s plans for a giant new coal mine in Australia’s Bowen Basin may suffer a setback after key stakeholder UniSuper Management said it won’t support the project. The A$80-billion pension fund told its investment partners that it won’t support the A$1.5-billion Valeria project as the economics "don’t stack up", chief investment officer John Pearce said in a University of Melbourne webinar Thursday night. "Through a complicated structure, a joint venture, we actually own 15% of that coal mine," he said.

BHP Group pursued permission to damage Aboriginal cultural sites in April, an Australian parliamentary inquiry heard on Thursday, despite being told of the distress it would cause traditional owners. The inquiry is investigating Rio Tinto's legal detonation in May of sacred and historically significant rockshelters for an iron ore mine at Juukan Gorge in Western Australia's Pilbara region.

Whitehaven Coal on Friday urged its shareholders to vote against a resolution at its annual general meeting that pushed for disclosing a plan annually on how it would meet certain goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change. Australia's biggest independent coal miner called the resolution, which seeks a plan demonstrating how it would wind up its production assets and operations in a manner consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement, a "misrepresentation".

Gold and base metals explorer Anglo Australian Resources will raise A$11-million in a single tranche placement to fund exploration at the Mandilla gold project, in Western Australia. Anglo Australian will issue some 64.7-million shares, at a price of 17c each to sophisticated and professional investors.

ASX-listed Pacifico Minerals will raise A$12-million through a share placement and share purchase plan (SPP), allowing the company to complete a definitive feasibility study (DFS) and take a final investment decision at its Sorby Hills lead/silver/zinc project, in Western Australia. Pacifico on Friday announced that it would raise some A$10-million through a two-tranche share placement to institutional and strategic investors, placing more than 555.5-million shares, at a price of 1.8c each, under its existing placement capacity.

Pressure equipment specialist Superior Pressure Solutions (Spress) has introduced hydrogen technology from German high-pressure systems supplier Maximator to the African market, offering local service and maintenance support by is technicians. Maximator is one of the world leaders in hydrogen filling stations, supplying the entire range from the compression station to the dispenser.

Electrolytic hydrogen production is a promising option when relatively small or medium flows of hydrogen are required. It is also often useful when high purity hydrogen is required for a variety of niche applications. However, recent advances have now made it possible to design, build and demonstrate large-scale electrolytic plants, says North-West University (NWU)-hosted HySA Infrastructure director, professor Dmitri Bessarabov. HySA Infrastructure at NWU is leading research and development efforts in South Africa in water electrolysis based on polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolysis technology.

Despite the challenges wrought by lockdown restrictions, mining and engineering consulting firm Mindset Mining Consultants has successfully completed a comprehensive longwall mining feasibility study for chemicals and energy company Sasol Mining. Sasol Mining sought ways of optimising its coal reserves, and their extraction, which will supply Sasol Synfuels throughout the prospected life of plant, which extends to 2050.

Construction engineering company Basil Read Mining has launched a new autonomous drill that could offer an increase of about 30% in productivity, compared to manual drilling, contracts director Nqobile Khumalo tells Mining Weekly. The first C650 drill is to be delivered to a mine in Botswana after a final quality-assurance and -control testing phase currently under way.
