19 Sep 2019 --- In a bid to “modernize swine slaughter inspection,” the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is imposing a new inspection system for pork processing facilities called the New Swine Slaughter Inspection System (NSIS). Under the new system, plant employees in swine slaughter establishments that choose to enter the program will conduct the manual sorting activities of carcasses currently handled by USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) workers before final FSIS inspection. In addition, FSIS is revoking the limitations on line speeds in hog slaughter plants. The new rules have divided opinions in the meat industry, which leaves some critics concerned that the changes could lead to health and safety hazards.

19 Sep 2019 --- A four-year research project involving almost all major supermarkets in the Netherlands has been launched by Dutch-based researchers. The project seeks to examine interventions relating to transparency and support consumers in making healthier and more sustainable product choices. “Transparently healthy & sustainable” is run by The University of Groningen and Wageningen University & Research and involves Albert Heijn, Aldi, Jumbo, Lidl as well as Superunie and The Dutch Food Retail Association (CBL).

19 Sep 2019 --- Plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy products are market growth drivers, according to German supplier of stabilizing and texturing systems Hydrosol. The company is debuting its new functional systems and all-in compounds for making plant-based burger patties, cold cuts and sausages, as well as vegan alternatives to pizza cheese, cream cheese and sour cream. The manufacturer pegs convincing flavor and texture as key elements of success in plant-based offerings.

19 Sep 2019 --- Disruption in the protein market could cause the US livestock industry to be on the verge of bankruptcy by 2030, following a predicted 70 percent drop in demand for cow products. The bold claims are according to independent think tank RethinkX, whose report “Rethinking Food and Agriculture 2020-2030” forecasts that proteins will be five times cheaper by 2030 and 10 times cheaper by 2035 than existing animal proteins. The report aims to focus decision-makers’ attention on the scale, speed and impact of modern food disruption and highlights how approval processes for new food products will be critical.

18 Sep 2019 --- Previously known for contributing to fruit color and shape, rider retrotransponsons, or jumping genes, have been found to alter the gene expression and physical characteristics of plants. Recent research conducted by the University of Cambridge’s Sainsbury Laboratory (SLCU) and Department of Plant Sciences, UK, has shown that jumping genes’ native regeneration attributes has the potential to vary fruit and vegetable traits. This could allow crops to better cope with more extreme conditions driven by the changing climate such as helping to make them drought-resistent.

18 Sep 2019 --- The best before date on some of Unilever’s products under the Knorr and Hellmann’s brands will now be followed by the Danish phrase for “often good after” in a bid to cut food waste. Unilever Denmark took part in developing the concept with food waste reduction app Too Good To Go, along with other food manufacturers – including Carlsberg, Arla and Orkla Foods – who are now using the labeling on some of their Danish offerings. This fall, the three Knorr rice noodle mini meals launched in Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway will become the first Unilever products labeled with this text.

18 Sep 2019 --- The UK and Australia have committed to a rapid and ambitious free trade agreement and later today will agree to begin trade negotiations as soon as possible after the UK leaves the EU on October 31. A possible deal could lead to opportunities for exporters on both sides, with British whisky producers potentially benefiting from lower tariffs.

18 Sep 2019 --- Innovators specializing in plant-based and cultivated (lab-grown) meat may be eligible for up to US$300,000 in research funding under US non-profit Good Food Institute’s (GFI) Competitive Research Grant Program. In total, the institute will be granting US$3.15 million toward the improvement of sensory qualities, cost and scale-up of clean meat production. GFI will be publicly announcing the successful grant applicants in early 2020.

17 Sep 2019 --- Australia-based OpenSC has raised $4 million in seed funding, advancing the transparency of food products known to have significant environmental or social injustice risks within their supply chains, such as seafood and palm oil. The impact tech venture was developed in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature Australia (WWF-Australia) and BCG Digital Ventures (BCGDV). OpenSC will be using funds to propel the development of its digital platform, which leverages blockchain and other technologies.

17 Sep 2019 --- Nature-based ingredient supplier CP Kelco plans to increase pectin production capacity by approximately 15 percent at its Lille Skensved, Denmark, facility in response to continued global demand for the product. This significant investment will enhance market supply in 2020 of low methoxyl amidated (LMA) pectin, which is suited to products such as ambient drinking yogurt and fruit preparations.

17 Sep 2019 --- As many as 10 percent of Americans claim they always buy meat alternatives, while a further 36 percent claim to do so often or sometimes. This is according to new consumer research conducted by Innova Market Insights, which highlights how pervasive the trend has become in a relatively short time. The survey also found that only 22 percent purchase from the category on rare occasions.

16 Sep 2019 --- Arla Foods has begun a public-private partnership in Nigeria with the local dairy sector to invest in small-scale farmers and strengthen its business position in the country. Kaduna State in northwestern Nigeria and the Nigerian government will offer 1,000 nomadic dairy farmers permanent farmlands with direct water access. Meanwhile, Arla will purchase, collect, process and bring the local milk to market. This partnership is the first of its size in Nigeria and foresees a balance between the development of the local dairy sector and imported milk and dairy products.

16 Sep 2019 --- Danish sugar processor Nordic Sugar, a member of Germany’s Nordzucker Group, has begun the harvest and processing of sugar beets, referred to as its “beet campaign,” at its Polish plant. Nordzucker expects a similar level of overall earnings from this campaign as in the previous year, albeit with “very strong regional differences” due to low precipitation levels in Poland and Germany. The campaign will end in January 2020.

16 Sep 2019 --- Bunge is set to increase its grain origination capacity in Brazil through an agreement to buy 30 percent of Agrofel Grãos e Insumos, an agricultural inputs reseller in Rio Grande do Sul. This investment is aligned with Bunge’s strategy to focus on its core businesses but is still to be approved by the Brazilian Antitrust Authority. The other companies of Ferrarin Group – which Agrofel is part of – are not part of the deal. Further financial details were not disclosed.
