Expanded rules against promoting hateful ideologies at TikTok include barring "misinformation and hurtful stereotypes" about Jewish, Muslim and other communities, the company said in a blog post. "This includes misinformation about notable Jewish individuals and families who are used as proxies to spread anti-Semitism," TikTok said. The platform has already banned posts denying the Holocaust.
US drugmaker Purdue Pharma pleaded guilty to three criminal charges over its intense drive to push sales of the prescription opioid OxyContin, which stoked a nationwide addiction crisis, the Justice Department announced Wednesday. Purdue also agreed to $8.3 billion in fines, damages and forfeitures to settle the criminal case against it, the department said.
Britain said Wednesday it was resuming trade negotiations with the European Union, accelerating the fraught process to round-the-clock meetings in a bid to salvage a deal within weeks. London abruptly froze the talks on Friday after EU leaders said it was up to Britain, not the EU, to make concessions on contentious issues such as state subsidies, how to arbitrate future differences and fishing rights when a post-Brexit transition period expires.
Pope Francis called for the creation of civil union laws for same-sex couples in a documentary released Wednesday, straying from the Vatican's traditional position on the topic. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Wednesday ruled out a diplomatic solution to the conflict with Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, dealing a fresh blow to efforts by world powers to secure a sustainable truce. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been engaged in fierce fighting for almost a month over Karabakh, a region of Azerbaijan controlled by Armenian separatists in the wake of the break-up of the Soviet Union. The flare-up of the conflict has left hundreds dead, with world powers so far unable to persuade either side to stop fighting.
Hammered by the coronavirus pandemic, UK businesses face a double-whammy from Brexit and are furious at the government for insisting the onus lies on them to get ready for life outside the EU. With just over two months to go before a post-Brexit transition period ends, the government is locked in a standoff with the 27-nation European Union over a future trade pact.
Heavy fighting between oil-rich Azerbaijan and its impoverished, landlocked neighbour Armenia over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region is dealing a major blow to their economies, already battered by the coronavirus pandemic. The Armenian-populated region of Nagorno-Karabakh broke away from Azerbaijan in a 1990s war and has remained under the control of ethnic-Armenian separatists backed by Yerevan. It has a small but fast-growing economy which was worth $710 million in 2019, according official figures cited by the RBK Russian business news website.
For anyone who wondered if politicians indulged in degrees of self-dealing when passing laws, a study published in the latest issue of Legislative Studies Quarterly says yes. That shouldn’t be surprising. Previous research has shown connections between elected officials’ wealth and legislative activities. However, the picture is more complicated than a simplistic thought that all politicians are only out for themselves – no matter where in the world they are – or, even when they are, politicians are necessarily good at it.

Anti-terror prosecutor Jean-Francois Ricard said the children -- aged 14 and 15 -- were in a group who shared 300-350 euros ($356-$414) offered by the killer to help find teacher Samuel Paty.
