Cement carrier SIRIOS CEMENT I with load of cement while departing for Italy, ran aground in Gulf of Saloniki, Greece, at around 1100 LT Sep 14. The ship was refloated some 4 hours later with the help of tugs, and taken back to Thessaloniki Port, for inspedtion. As of 1700 LT, she was still at port. No news on damages yet. Offshore supply ship CALETA went out of control due to mechanical failure while leaving Ciudad del Carmen port, southeast Mexico, Gulf of Mexico, and struck berthed offshore supply ship DONA DIANA, at 0340 LT Sep 13. DONA DIANA was about to set sail with some 80 oil platform replacement personnel on board, to be transferred to oil platforms. DONA DIANA suffered starboard hull breach above waterline, her trip was cancelled. CALETA sustained superficial damages. Cargo ship was troubled in South Atlantic, disabled since Aug 27. Bulk carrier approached disabled ship on Sep 7 or earlier, she resumed her voyage after tug arrived. Cargo ship was taken on tow on Sep 7, later joined by two more salvage ships. As of morning Sep 14, caravan was under way proceeding at slow speed. Fire was reported to erupt in engine room of Aframax crude oil tanker DUBAI HARMONY at around 0900 UTC Sep 13, at Sture oil terminal, Southern Norway. Terminal personnel was evacuated, tugs approached berthed tanker to contain possible oil leak. Fire was extinguished by 1110 UTC, according to fire department statement. Extent of tanker damages unknown. Terminal didn’t suffer any damages, no injures reported. Tanker seems to be in ballast, yet or already, depending on whether she was loading or offloading oil. Spanish Maritime Salvage reported on Twitter (SALVAMENTO MARÍTIMO @salvamentogob) medevac of a Master of container ship SAG GOOD TIMING on Sep 12, at Valencia Anchorage. Master fell ill and was in need of hospitalization, he was airlifted by helicopter and transferred to hospital. SAG GOOD TIMING arrived at Valencia Anchorage early Sep 12 from Algeria. Hapless ferry PINAR DEL RIO is said by local sources to be most probably, a total loss, after she was battered by recent storm and visibly sank lower. Locals said stern and starboard hull are severely damaged. Owner nevertheless, insists on ferry condition as stable. General cargo ship LEWANG ran aground on Kalampunian Island coast, Kudat, northernmost tip of Kalimantan, late Sep 8. The ship reportedly was refloated and taken to deeper waters, but prohibited to resume her voyage from Kinabaly to Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia, northern Kalimantan. Investigation under way, owner is to settle compensation claims, because the ship grounded in protected marine park area. It is said, that grounding was caused by navigational error triggered but failed navigational device, whatever it may be. Container ship JOANNA BORCHARD suffered containers shift in Mediterranean, while en route from Salerno, Italy to Castello Spain, sometime in Sep 9-11 period. Not clear what happened and why didn’t the ship called Salerno. She berthed at Castello late Sep 11, and as of evening Sep 12, remained berthed. No news on containers loss, which may have take place. Ukrainian crew sentenced to 5-8 years in jail and crazy fine. The court of Lille, France, sentenced 9 Ukrainian sailors to 5-8 years in jail, for drug trafficking. General cargo vessel CARIB PALM was intercepted by French forces on Dec 10 off Boulogne-sur-Mer, and taken to Boulogne-sur-Mer for search.the ship was en route from Dominican Republic to Poland, allegedly for repairs, via Cartagena Colombia. French Coast Guard found ballasting freighter suspicious, and ordered CARIB PALM to sail to Boulogne-sur-Mer. Dogs search didn’t detect anything suspicious, but continuing search found hiding place with 2.3 ton of 75%-pure cocaine in it. Back then, it was a record drug bust for French law enforcement. Master of bulk carrier UNISON MEDAL was reportedly, hit by broken mooring line and died on the spot, in the morning Sep 10 at Ilo Port, Peru. According to the report, mooring line broke in strong wind, Master went to fore or aft, not clear, and when he was assessing situation, another mooring line snapped. One of the biggest and most luxury yachts of the world, yacht NERO, capsized in dry dock of Amico & Co ship repair yard at Genoa, Italy, understood on Sep 11, probably earlier. She capsized shortly after entering dry dock, reportedly after supporting block or blocks buckled in. reportedly, several people were injured, four of them seriously. Fire erupted in engine room of bulk carrier KIRAN ASYA, berthed at Isdemir, Iskenderun, Turkey, late at night Sep 9. Several fire engine were deployed, fire was said to be quickly taken under control and extinguished, no injures reported. Extent of damages unknown.
