The packaging design was given a “clinical feel” to help visually reinforce to potential buyers that the product inside is researched and proven. Moreover, the products are packaged with reusable and refillable formats in mind. The subscription-based model taps into the growing telehealth market, which has “exploded during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Proper notes.

03 Aug 2020 --- European venture company Seventure Partners has revealed that the French government has approved the eligibility of its Health for Life Capital II (HFL 2) fund for microbiome innovation funding. The approval came from the technical committee of the initiative, which was set up to support the financing of technology companies. The move means that HFL 2 will be the first and only microbiome-focused venture part of the program. As part of the initiative, French institutional investors have committed to devote over €5 billion (US$5.8 billion) to the financing of innovative companies by December 31, 2022.

03 Aug 2020 --- Netherlands-based biotech company Veramaris has unveiled a new source of omega 3 fatty acids for pet food called Veramaris Pets. The natural marine algal oil is made from microalgae and provides animal feed twice as much eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), compared to fish oil, the company says. This latest development for Veramaris follows a 12-month effort in establishing itself in the aquaculture market. The company is now expanding its portfolio, while refining its algal oil to optimize its taste for pets.

31 Jul 2020 --- This week in nutrition news, Irish research bodies jointly formed a microbiome analysis start-up called SeqBiome to further research gut health. In the North America market, Health Canada approved a cannabis research license for EnWave’s Canadian headquarters. Meanwhile, the production of “UpSpring Baby Iron + Immunity” by Texan supplements company UpSpring was suspended due to an undeclared milk allergen in the bottle. In Cleveland, US, legislation was passed, banning restaurants from offering only sugary beverages to children’s menus.

31 Jul 2020 --- Nestlé’s infant nutrition subsidiary Gerber is expanding its organic snacks range with the introduction of Gerber Organic BabyPops. The product is a new puffed corn and oat snack which comes in three varieties – Peanut, Tomato and Banana Raspberry. The snacks do not contain any added sweetener or salt, while their organic status signifies non-GMO credentials, the company notes. The launch comes at a time when industry is exploring allergy prevention by exposing children to such foods in early life. Research has shown intolerances can occur less frequently if babies are exposed to allergens sooner in their development.

30 Jul 2020 --- Further research backing Euromed’s ABAlife fig extract has found that it can increase muscle metabolism and promote insulin sensitivity. The mouse study was carried out by the Nutritional Immunology and Molecular Medicine Laboratory (NIMML) in the US and found that the extract promotes glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity while decreasing obesity-related systemic inflammation.
