18 Sep 2019 --- Some of the anti-cancer benefits of tomatoes, specifically those from a compound called lycopene, could disappear when eaten with iron-rich foods, according to a new study from Ohio State University (OSU). The research sheds light on the importance of understanding the nutritional content of our foods for optimal nutrient absorption. Strategically pairing foods can boost nutrient absorption – such as lycopene in tomatoes and olive oil – but less is known about which pairings inhibit optimal absorption, or even hinder it. The researchers will further investigate lycopene’s role in fighting cancer and its interplay with other compounds and nutrients, to allow for more reliable, science-based dietary recommendations for disease.

16 Sep 2019 --- Fast food giant Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) has given up on offering healthy fast food options across its UK locations, as “no one is buying them,” according to a KFC senior executive. In an effort to boost healthier eating habits, the fast food chain launched non-fried alternatives in the past that were commercially unsuccessful. Instead, the company is now adopting a “health by stealth” approach, by reducing the calories, fat content and salt levels in its existing products. The move follows a global push toward healthier food options for the public. For example, Public Health England (PHE)’s proposal to reduce the maximum calories of ready meals to 544 per serving, as well as a Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) repo.

16 Sep 2019 --- Awareness of the importance of clinical evidence for new products is rising as pharmaceutical companies move toward nutraceuticals and consumer demand for quality products becomes more pronounced. NutritionInsight speaks with PharmaLinea’s Chairman and Founder, Blaž Gorjup, about how the private label food supplement provider sets itself apart in the market by conducting its own clinical substantiation of supplements – an act that is rare, if not non-existent, for a private label provider. 13 Sep 2019 --- Cases of diabetes have decreased in across many populations, according to an analysis of 47 studies between 1980 and 2017. Since 2006, the incidence of clinically diagnosed diabetes has continued to rise in only a minority of populations, with a third of the studies reporting a fall in incidence in this time period. While this is likely due to the success of preventative strategies changing people’s dietary habits, the researchers stress that “we cannot take our foot off the pedal” if the changes are to be maintained.

13 Sep 2019 --- Despite meat-alternatives benefiting from a health halo relating to various claims including gluten-free, organic and vegan, they are often highly processed and packed with salt. This is according to a new Australian report published by The George Institute for Global Health, VicHealth and the National Heart Foundation of Australia, which highlights the large variation in the salt levels in products such as meat-free sausages and falafels.
