Amazon has compiled a run of record profits over the last few years. There’s a perception that the highly profitable, market-leading Amazon Web Services cloud division has been the sole force behind this trend, consistently pulling the company into the black and subsidizing the traditionally narrow margins of retail. Jay Carney, Amazon’s senior vice president of global corporate affairs, pushed back against that assumption at the 2019 Geekwire Summit last week. He agreed that cloud computing is a more profitable business than retail. However, he was adamant that the retail arm is profitable on its own and doesn’t need the…

Gareth Small seems like any of the many thousands of people who have moved to Seattle in recent years to work in the tech industry. The software engineer puts in a full day at work and still likes to code from home at night. He enjoys hiking, reading, learning to snowboard and checking out the local restaurant scene. But it’s Small’s journey — which included four years in prison — to his job as a new Google employee at offices in Kirkland, Wash., that differs from most other tech workers. He went viral with a LinkedIn post about his “surreal”…

Maryn Sage remembers the words she heard on the day she learned that her 16-year-old son, Jedd Feliciano, was cancer-free. “His marrow’s clean,” the doctor told her over the phone, ending a devastating fight with leukemia that proved resistant to the standard treatment. Feliciano’s cure had come in the form of a clinical trial for CAR T immunotherapy at Seattle Children’s. Two years after his diagnosis, Feliciano was able to return to high school this fall as a junior. A new 540,000 square-foot building in downtown Seattle hopes to expand the kinds of clinical trials that helped Feliciano and to…

The WeWork fallout is now affecting Seattle, where the troubled company has canceled plans for its WeLive co-living residential program at a 36-story building in the Belltown neighborhood. WeWork originally announced plans for the Third & Lenora building in 2017, following initial reports a year earlier, with a scheduled opening next spring. The building, developed by Martin Selig Real Estate, has hundreds of apartments and plenty of co-working space, in addition to common areas and retail spaces. WeWork and Martin Selig Real Estate issued a joint statement on Monday. The companies still plan to open a WeWork co-working location in…

Amazon-owned Twitch still dominates the streaming space; Ninja’s move to Mixer hasn’t helped Microsoft with user growth; Fortnite viewership is dropping; and a non-gaming related channel is gaining popularity. Those are some of the takeaways from a third-quarter streaming market report from StreamElements, an Israeli company that advertises itself as the “Ultimate Streamer Platform.” The report, made in conjunction with independent Twitch analysis site SullyGnome and influencer data tracking service, goes into detail regarding the audience, platforms, content, and individual stars of the streaming scene from this past July, August, and September. There are four major players in streaming: Twitch,…

Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign unveiled an ambitious plan to reform corporate America on Monday. The proposal holds one company up as an example of how a lax regulatory environment has created an economy that rewards the rich and powerful at the expense of everyone else, from Sanders’ point of view. Amazon is cast as the villain in Sanders’ story; a symbol of corporate misbehavior to be bridled by his proposal. The plan mentions Amazon three times more than it does any other company. In response, Amazon says it pays all of the taxes it owes under the law. The…

Microsoft on Monday kicked off public trials of its Project xCloud game streaming service that lets users play high-powered Xbox games such as Halo on their smartphones. The company last month began accepting sign-ups for the preview, which gives gamers in the U.S., U.K., and South Korea initial access to Project xCloud. The preview includes four games: Gears 5, Halo 5: Guardians, Killer Instinct, and Sea of Thieves. It will start small, on Android devices only, with a limited number of participants and then grow over time. Microsoft reporter Paul Thurrott tested the service Monday and noted that the “performance…

Amazon has doubled up on its commitment to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, as a new $1 million gift from the tech giant to the Wikimedia Endowment was announced on Monday. The gift comes about a year after Amazon first gave $1 million to the organization. The fund is dedicated to sustaining Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects over the long term and the campaign has raised $42 million since its launch in January 2016. “We are grateful to Amazon for its continued collaboration and support in ensuring access to information and free and open knowledge, for today and tomorrow’s generations,”…

Amazon spent most of the last decade gobbling up every available piece of real estate in Seattle, helping power a building boom in the city. But with signs pointing to Amazon cooling on its hometown, a new report lays out how the tech giant’s expansion in nearby Bellevue could galvanize a level of growth over the next couple years that took decades to achieve in the past. Just two years after opening its first office in Bellevue, Amazon has leased three additional office projects, and it is planning to build a tower — or two —on a high-profile site it…

Seattle’s Allen Institute for Brain Science is sharing 70 trillion bytes’ worth of data documenting electrical activity in mouse brains, collected by a new type of silicon probe that can monitor hundreds of neurons simultaneously. The Neuropixels system, developed by an international collaboration that includes the Allen Institute, could be adapted to record brain activity in human patients as well, said Josh Siegle, a senior scientist at the institute who works with the probes. “The application I’m most interested in is decoding the communication patterns of the brain, and really understanding how information is transmitted between regions,” Siegle told GeekWire.…

Mixer has lost both of its co-founders as the Microsoft-owned streaming service looks to mount a challenge to the incumbent power in the market: Amazon’s Twitch. Matt Salsamendi, who co-founded the streaming service originally known as Beam at the age of 18, tweeted about his departure late last week. He wrote that the first seeds for Mixer were planted when he was 13, and now he is ready to pursue a new idea. It involves lasers and EDM shows. After 5 incredible years, tomorrow will be my last day at Mixer. A bit about the story of Beam and what's…

Like most things related to technology, Guillaume Wiatr’s work and style is evolving. At the 2019 GeekWire Summit, that evolution was once again on full display as the visual strategist returned to capture highlights throughout the conference. Wiatr, the founder of the presentation coaching company Metahelm, has been bringing his “graphic facilitation” skills to the Summit for five years. And as his process has shifted from markers and giant poster boards to an iPad and a graphics editing app, Wiatr has also noticed a change in Summit participants. “Overall, I hear more maturity,” said Wiatr, whose job is to listen…

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates met with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein multiple times starting in 2011, The New York Times reported, revealing a closer connection between the two billionaires than previously known. Gates told The Wall Street Journal last month that he “didn’t have any business relationship or friendship” with Epstein, who committed suicide in prison in August while facing charges of sex trafficking of minors. That came after reports of a purported connection between Gates and Epstein to provide funding to a prominent MIT research program. According to the new details via The NYT, Gates reportedly visited Epstein’s Manhattan…

Slalom Build‘s Ian Cook grew up in a house that his family built in Kenai, Alaska, population 7,800. There was no indoor plumbing until he reached fourth grade and no electric heat for many years. There was electricity and a bus came not too far from the homestead to take him to school. “I spent my formative years hauling wood in wagons and pumping water,” Cook said. “That certainly had a motivating factor for me in progressing my career.” Another motivator was his dad’s unlikely passion for computers and coding, living in the wilds of Alaska in the early 1980s.…

NASA confirmed today that Boeing is scheduled to conduct the next high-profile test of its CST-100 Starliner space capsule in a little more than three weeks. The target data for Starliner’s pad abort test is set for Nov. 4 at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, NASA said in a blog update. That’s in line with the plan that Boeing executive John Mulholland laid out earlier this week at a New Mexico space symposium. If next month’s test is successful, Boeing would target Dec. 17 for the launch of an uncrewed Starliner to the International Space Station from Cape…
