Presaging a new use for video surveillance, the Chinese government has rolled out a smartphone app that notifies users whether they have been exposed to people carrying the corona virus. The app, which was developed by the China Electronics Technology Group, a state-owned consortium, leverages China's extensive video surveillance network and facial recognition technology to identify potential carriers of the virus. Although there are significant privacy concerns associated with ubiquitous surveillance infrastructures, as deployed by China, in this instance, the potential for managing societal threats such as pandemics may outweigh such concerns.
