Jak Wilmot, co-founder of Atlanta-based VR agency Disrupt VR, spent an entire week locked into a VR headset – and while he missed the ‘energy’ of the natural world, his conclusion was that virtual reality was “whatever you want it to be.”The experiment – or publicity stunt, delete as appropriate – came with a couple of caveats. Wilmot could take up to 30 seconds out to switch VR headsets and have 30 seconds without the headset on to eat if necessary, but aside from that he was in for the duration. Missing the outside world was a clear theme – “I almost feel like I’m in my own 500 square foot spaceship, and I’m really missing Earth”, he noted at one point – while integrating between the physical and virtual was somewhat of a challenge. Earl.

London-based digital agency Brandwidth has created a new Toyota hybrid augmented reality (AR) application for Toyota GB, which will give Toyota customers an inside look of the car brand’s C-HR model. The application uses AR and objective recognition software to overlap graphics of the inside of the Hybrid drivetrain onto physical vehicles, which will help customers understand the working of the system through an iPad app that will be used in Toyota showrooms, and also at shopping centres and trade shows. At present, the app supports the Toyota C-HR model across all grades and colours. Stephen Duval, TCMS and direct marketing manager at Toyota, said: “As pioneers in the hybrid space, we wanted to find a way to help our customers understand h.

Of all the exciting, time-saving and useful apps out there today, mapping sits somewhat between a rock and a hard place. The maps themselves are vital, but the direction sometimes isn’t. If you take a look on any busy high street with people staring at their phones, several will be working out just in which direction they have to go from their map. Increasingly – as this reporter can testify from personal experience – one can spend a fair amount of time walking the wrong way before realising. Google is aiming to tear this up with the launch of a new feature, called the AR Visual Positioning System, which uses augmented reality to give real-time directions. The user simply puts their device in front of their eyes having inputted the directio.

It’s an increasingly common sight on pavements and roads; people standing semi-aimlessly, phone in hand, frequently checking the GPS and wondering where their taxi is. Lyft is looking to switch this up with a new system which aims to utilise augmented reality (AR) to give greater insights. The information, which appears in a patent filed in June but published on Thursday , is based around ‘augmented reality elements to mark specific locations within a display of real-world surroundings’, as the filing puts it. “Based on the historical ride information, the disclosed systems are able to identify an ideal pickup location for a waiting passenger in accordance with the passenger’s location, the driver’s location, location traffic conditions, [a.

A lesser-spotted optimistic research study focusing on virtual reality; Juniper Research has predicted revenues from VR-specific games will rise from $1.2 billion to $8.2bn by 2023. The report, titled ‘Virtual Reality Markets: Innovation, Disruption & Future Prospects 2019-2013’, argues that the development of smartphone VR content is key to increasing consumer confidence in VR – which as regular readers of this publication will be aware is less than stellar right now – across all platforms. According to the report, 52 million mobile VR devices will access games globally in 2019 and the number will rise to over 100 million devices by 2023.
