Researchers at the University of Cambridge have found that virtual reality technology can help identify Alzheimer’s symptoms with more precision than the ‘gold standard’ cognitive testing. The researchers first discovered in 2014 that the “entorhinal cortex” is one of the first regions that get affected by the disease – this could explain the reason behind old people getting lost, which is the most common symptom in the older age group. The majority of consumers in the UK believe in an ‘extended reality’ (XR) future according to new research – although comparatively few have tried it out. The findings appear in a new study from SYZYGY Extended Realities, which polled more than 1,000 UK citizens on their knowledge and perceptions of virtual, augmented and mixed reality. Almost three quarters (71%) of those polled said an XR future – defined here as an umbrella term for ‘all computer-generated environments that either merge the physical and virtual, or create an entirely immersive experience for the user’ – would be of interest when purchasing a product or service.

CBS Interactive has collaborated with real-time 3D developer Unity Technologies to enable advertisers to build and scale augmented reality (AR) campaigns across a variety of mobile apps of CBS, including CBS Sports, CBS News, CNET, GameSpot and TV Guide. John Lewis & Partners has announced that it will be trialling a virtual reality (VR) experience called ‘Visualise Your Space’, in order to help customers in deciding which home products they should shop for in order to suit their home perfectly. Guided by John Lewis Partners in three trial shops, customers who are shopping for home products will be able to put the dimensions, windows and doors of the room of their choice to update into an iPad via an app, and then drop in John Lewis products to see how their interior ideas would look in their home.

Qualcomm Technologies has announced the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Smart Viewer Reference Design, which is a VR form factor built together with Goertek on the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR1 Platform. US-based Analogix Semiconductor has introduced its VirtualLink Reference Design that enables VirtualLink directly on the motherboard of high-performance gaming notebooks, allowing them to support virtual reality (VR) over the USB-C connector. A number of industry experts in the AR/VR domain foresee convergence of the two technologies into one unique spatial computing solution. However, Digi-Capital has predicted that mobile AR, smart glasses, and VR may in fact be separated in the medium-term from a commercial point of view. AR is estimated to reach 2.5 billion installed base and $70-$75 billion revenue and VR is expected to hit over 30 million installed base and $10 billion to $15 billion revenue by 2023. Installed bases, form factors, prices, use cases, business models, and unit economics, are the likely reasons that bifurcate the two. At the recently held 2019 I/O event, Google announced that it is adding a mix of camera and augmented reality (AR) to its search engine that will generate 3D AR models as search results. For instance, users can have look at “realistic” pairs of shoes they are trying to buy online; similarly, shopping clothes online can also be previewed with one’s existing wardrobe. A new study conducted by Magid, a consumer-centred business strategy and research company, has revealed that both VR and AR can play a crucial role in enhancing brand perception. The study, which comprised a series of focus groups in Los Angeles and New York along with tech enthusiasts who had earlier experience of VR, revealed that while VR content was found to drive emotion, the AR content was making more sense for daily integration. The study also found that words like ‘realistic’, ‘immersive’, ‘curious’, ‘exciting’, ‘fantasy’ and ‘escape’ are the one that consumers are connecting with VR.
