This week Merlin Entertainments has announced that its Darling Harbour attractions – SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo and Madame Tussauds – will re-open their doors on June 1. There will of course be extra hygiene measures in place to ensure the safety of visitors, including completely cashless operations and the lowering of capacity limits with allocated time-slots for guests. For business events, Merlin Entertainments is currently offering private dinners for up to 10 people in its Great Barrier Reef exhibit.

On Monday night guests completing their 14-day quarantine at Sofitel Sydney Wentworth were treated to an opera performance featuring principle soprano with Opera Australia Jane Ede. The performance took place in the hotel’s outdoor garden terrace, and 460 guests spectated from their balconies. In addition to Jane, audience members were entertained by Jodie Goodwin, Josephine Stark and Olivia French from Accor’s team. The performance was paired with a quintessentially-Sofitel French meal of niçoise salad, basque style braised chicken and crème caramel.

A survey conducted by London venue BMA House has indicated a significant desire by event planners to improve their work/life balance. The survey, which was responded to by 229 planners and delegates, found that 68 per cent of organisers want a better work/life balance, and 87 per cent believe that more people should be offered the opportunity to work from home in the long term.

Like everywhere else, the Northern Territory has copped substantial tourism losses due to the impact of COVID-19. One business lobby group believes the solution is to re-open the Uluru climb – which was permanently closed in October last year – for another two to three years. Chairman of Alice Springs Major Business Group Batic said that ‘bold thinking’ will be required to kickstart the NT’s tourism industry when things return to normal, and that since October, 10,000 fewer people have passed through the airport.

As reported by 1 News, today New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern will announce whether the country will move to Covid-19 Alert Level 2, a transition that will permit indoor and outdoor gatherings with up to 100 people. As business events could be among these gatherings, Conventions and Incentives New Zealand (CINZ) is urging the government to make a clear distinction between business events and mass gatherings to give domestic meetings a solid platform to resume under the new alert level.

Dransfield Hotels has released a revised report indicating that Sydney and Melbourne’s hotel sectors will face a slow and staggered recovery from the impact of COVID-19. The result, they believe, will be declines in revenue of more than 30 per cent over the next 12 to 24 months. The report forecasts that demand for accommodation will pick up from September, however that a return to pre-COVID levels of 78 per cent occupancy will only be possible once international flights resume.

Hanmer Springs’ Heritage Hotel will not reopen after the Covid-19 lockdown due to the increased number of holiday homes in the town and the financial pressure resulting from the pandemic. Director of Hanmer Management Ltd Graham Wilkinson said that the hotel is not profitable, and re-opening it after lockdown would cost a minimum of $300,000. The hotel’s 40 full-time staff will be paid their full leave entitlements, with the possibility of employment at other Heritage hotels.

In the face of financial challenges, CINZ has made the tough decision to say farewell to three of its employees: Heather Cornish, Heidi Heming and Catherine Hayes. Catherine has been with CINZ for 10 years in the role of marketing coordinator, and Heather joined six years ago as events and marketing director. Heidi started with the organisation in 2008, and has worked alongside Sharon Auld in the Australian office as business development manager.
