The United States Federal Aviation Administration, which has been investigating Boeing’s grounded 737 Max in the wake of two crashes caused by malfunctions of its onboard systems, has discovered another, unrelated safety flaw. Reuters was first to report the news, with its sources indicating that the new safety issue was discovered in simulator tests last week , and now Boeing faces increased delays, including the potential need for hardware fixes, before it’s able to regain certification for airworthiness of its 737 Max. A subsequent emailed statement from the US regulator confirmed, without elaborating, that “The FAA recently found a potential risk that Boeing must mitigate.” Citing two sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg... Amazon Prime Day 2019 is still a few weeks away — it starts on July 15th, in case you hadn’t heard. But right now, Prime members can save $30 on a year-long membership to Audible , the company’s audiobook platform. Not just that, but Amazon will also toss in an Echo Dot (third-generation) to go with it for an extra $1. Paying for a year of Audible service usually costs $150, and the Echo Dot costs an extra $50 at regular price. It should go without saying that this is a far better deal than usual, and buying a year-long subscription is smarter than paying month to month, which costs you $180 after a single year. Once you subscribe, you’ll get two Audible Original titles each month and one credit to redeem on the audiobook of your... Continu.

Judging by the flood of notifications I get on a daily basis from Google Maps, it really likes me — maybe a little too much. If you use Google Maps on Android, you might be in the same boat. Google Maps has a lot of notification options (between 40 and 54 nestled into 10 categories in the three phones that we tried out), and they’re all turned on by default. When I look down the list, I find a few crucial notifications in the mix, like the one that lets me know my train schedule before I leave for work. But I find most of the others to be trivial and annoying to deal with, constantly stacking up in my notification tray and distracting me from other important notifications. (Note: This isn’t an issue for people who use iPhones. It’s just...

Just in time for Pride week , Nerf is bringing us what looks like its best Overwatch- inspired blaster yet: a fully automatic, Nerf Rival ball-blasting, 30-round version of Soldier 76’s pulse rifle from the game, complete with lighting, "recoil action," and a full mask with visor so you can look the part, too. It’s a GameStop exclusive that’ll cost $130 when it ships this November, so it’s not exactly cheap, and you’ll need six D-cell batteries to power it.

Reading platform Scribd is introducing a new way for readers to discover nonfiction books. The feature is called Snapshots, and it’s akin to a CliffsNotes version of a book you can find on the company’s platform that’s designed to introduce potential readers to new works in quick fashion. Originally founded as a document-sharing site, Scribd has branched out to become a subscription platform for reading. That vast amount of content means that there’s plenty of material to attract new subscribers but it also means that there’s a pitfall: how do you find what you’re looking for, or new books you didn’t know existed? Scribd already provides recommendations to readers based on their preferences and reading history. But, as the site notes,... Co.

Myst blew my mind over and over again, even before I popped it into the drive. In 1994, it was one of the first CD-ROMs that my family purchased, and I couldn’t believe how technology had managed to capture a damn rainbow , stick it into a plastic wafer, and store a then-photorealistic virtual world inside. That’s why my nostalgia flared up in 2014 when I heard Myst would be getting its own TV series from Legendary. It’s also why it’s flaring up again today: Village Roadshow Entertainment, the co-producer and financier of a lot of movies you’ve probably heard of , has purchased the rights to create a Myst TV series and / or films. But if Village Roadshow has the rights, does that mean Legendary doesn’t? And that it’s probably starting... Co.

WhatsApp is testing the idea of letting its users share posts from their WhatsApp status with other apps. Starting today, users in WhatsApp’s beta program will start to see a new sharing option beneath their status, which can be used to post a status directly to their Facebook story or send it to another app like Instagram, Gmail, or Google Photos. WhatsApp Status is the service’s Instagram Stories-style feature that lets you post images, text, and videos on your profile that disappear after 24 hours. Although there’s a direct link to share your status to Facebook, WhatsApp tells me that it’s not doing anything to link your accounts on the two services. Instead, it’s making use of the same iOS and Android data-sharing APIs as every other...

YouTube Music is expanding upon its Offline Mixtape feature with a more thorough version it’s now calling “smart downloads.” When you enable smart downloads, the app will automatically download up to 500 songs that you’ll be able to listen to anywhere — whether or not you’ve got a data connection. That selection includes the Offline Mixtape (a 100-song playlist based on your listening history) and “songs from your Liked Songs playlist and your other favorite playlists and albums.” You can set a limit for how much music smart downloads will pull down, and the process only happens at night and when your phone is connected to Wi-Fi. YouTube gave me an example of what this might look like for the average user: “Offline Mixtape, Pop Hotlist,...

Apple’s iMessage-based Business Chat feature is getting a big expansion today through internet store provider Shopify , which is adding support for the feature through its existing Shopify Ping customer communication app, via Engadget . For Shopify-based businesses already using services like Facebook Messenger for communicating with customers, it’s much not much more of a lift to add iMessage support.

Reddit has placed the controversial Donald Trump-focused subreddit r/The_Donald behind a quarantine screen after “repeated” misbehavior that includes inciting violence. A moderator posted an explanatory message from Reddit, which has asked moderators to make it clear that “violent content is unacceptable” on the forum. The move comes two days after Media Matters for America noted that r/The_Donald members were supporting violent attacks on Oregon police and other public officials. “We are clear in our site-wide policies that posting content that encourages or threatens violence is not allowed on Reddit. As we have shared, we are sensitive to what could be considered political speech, however, recent behaviors including threats against... Co.

Last month , Sony announced that its Xperia 1 flagship Android phone will coming out on July 12th in the US. But it shared today that preorders will start this Friday, June 28th, and that if you pony up $949.99 for the new phone, you’ll get a pretty great preorder bonus: its 1000X M3 wireless noise-canceling headphones (a $350 value). There are cheaper ways to get these headphones, if you don’t want the phone. We’ve seen them sell for as low as $289 in earlier sales. But if you were already planning to buy Sony’s new phone, this should make you even more confident in your decision to do so. The Xperia 1 features a 21:9 aspect ratio 4K OLED display, giving it a tall, skinny look. Its 6.5-inch display sounds unwieldy on paper, though this...

For the first time, the United States produced more energy from renewable sources than from coal, according to new figures from the US Energy Information Administration . Hydroelectric dams, solar panels, and wind turbines generated 68.5 million megawatt-hours of energy during the month of April 2019, compared to 60 million for coal. A couple of different trends converged to make this milestone possible, some long-term, and some short-term. Over the long term, as Bloomberg notes , the country has been shifting toward natural gas, which is not only cheaper than coal, but it also emits less carbon dioxide (although it’s still a fossil fuel). Wind and solar farms are also springing up nationwide because they’ve become so cheap to build. S... C.

A prominent artist on Dribbble is accusing the portfolio-sharing platform’s CEO of suspending his account after a series of tweets criticizing changes to the site. Artist Timothy J. Reynolds has been a vocal critic of Dribbble’s changing policies since the company was acquired by Tiny in 2017. On Tuesday, he quote-tweeted CEO Zack Onisko’s Twitter thread of changes coming to the site to share his criticisms, and found himself blocked by the CEO and his Dribbble account suspended. Dribbble’s last remaining co-founder, Dan Cederholm , left the company this week, leaving Onisko at the helm. Onisko highlighted a series of changes coming to the site, which include the phasing out of global leaderboards in favor of a new algorithm that decides...

Last summer, Motorola promised that it would be releasing Android 9 Pie on a variety of its devices, including the Moto Z2 Force . But in an update posted to its forums this week, the company said that would no longer be entirely true in the US. Instead, only the Verizon model of the phone is slated to get the update to the current version of Android, with Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T now set to be left out for what the company describes as “a variety of reasons,” according to Droid Life . The power of 5G. And it sounds like the Verizon model is only getting an update because it absolutely needs it so that the Z2 Force will work with the 5G Moto Mod, with the impression being that if not for that, it too likely wouldn’t have gotten an update..

Google is now beginning to roll out its location history auto-delete feature after announcing it back in May . The tool comes after an emphasis on user privacy this past developer conference season, where companies like Google and Apple both said they would begin rolling out tools to let customers have more control over what data they share with the companies or third-party apps. One of the criticisms, however, was that much of the work was still reliant upon the user to set up. Location tracking and web / app activity history on Google, for example, is kept until users manually delete them by default (the company says this is to improve user experience, ad targeting, and search personalizations). With the new tool, you can now set your...

The European Commission has opened an antitrust investigation into Broadcom, one of the leading chip manufacturers, over concerns that the company has enforced exclusivity agreements that leverage its dominance in the market to block out competitors. The commission is particularly focused on Broadcom chipsets for modems and TV set-top boxes, and it intends to impose an interim ban on the alleged exclusivity measures "to avoid any risk of serious and irreparable harm to competition," says Margrethe Vestager, the commission’s competition policy leader.

LGBTQ employees within Google are petitioning San Francisco Pride to kick the company from its official festivities this weekend. “[We] urge you to revoke Google’s sponsorship of Pride 2019, and exclude Google from representation in the San Francisco Pride Parade on June 30th, 2019,” reads a Medium post with the full petition. The name includes close to 100 signatures of employees who “are compelled to speak,” despite potential repercussions. The petition was first reported by Bloomberg . Prior to the petition’s public existence, a source told The Verge it was “extremely controversial” within the Gayglers group, but had already collected dozens of signatures by Tuesday night. “We do not make this request without serious consideration of...
