In huge news for New Zealand’s business events sector, large events with separate groups of 100 are now allowed to go ahead in the country. Conventions & Incentives New Zealand (CINZ) chief executive Lisa Hopkins said the industry is welcoming government changes to Alert Level 2 which allow multiple groups of 100 people to attend conference events. “These new guidelines give our industry much more confidence to plan forward, knowing we can deliver larger events,” she said.

Over the weekend it was announced that Stage Two of Queensland’s roadmap to easing restrictions has been brought forward to today, with several implications for events businesses. Organisers looking to host events with more than 20 people with no more than one patron per four sqm can do so, provided their Workplace Health and Safety Plans have been updated to respond to COVID-19. Sites that are considered ‘large and unique’ are required to develop a plan for their business.

The Tourism Re-start Taskforce has released a timetable indicating that business events with fewer than 100 people could start on July 1, with larger events predicted to start from September 10. The timeline also indicated that international travel to New Zealand and the Pacific could start from July 1, with the taskforce submitting a plan to the ACT government and industry groups for a ‘proof of concept flight’ between Canberra and Wellington on this date.

On Monday night guests completing their 14-day quarantine at Sofitel Sydney Wentworth were treated to an opera performance featuring principle soprano with Opera Australia Jane Ede. The performance took place in the hotel’s outdoor garden terrace, and 460 guests spectated from their balconies. In addition to Jane, audience members were entertained by Jodie Goodwin, Josephine Stark and Olivia French from Accor’s team. The performance was paired with a quintessentially-Sofitel French meal of niçoise salad, basque style braised chicken and crème caramel.

A survey conducted by London venue BMA House has indicated a significant desire by event planners to improve their work/life balance. The survey, which was responded to by 229 planners and delegates, found that 68 per cent of organisers want a better work/life balance, and 87 per cent believe that more people should be offered the opportunity to work from home in the long term.

Like everywhere else, the Northern Territory has copped substantial tourism losses due to the impact of COVID-19. One business lobby group believes the solution is to re-open the Uluru climb – which was permanently closed in October last year – for another two to three years. Chairman of Alice Springs Major Business Group Batic said that ‘bold thinking’ will be required to kickstart the NT’s tourism industry when things return to normal, and that since October, 10,000 fewer people have passed through the airport.
