Pfizer Inc. shares fell 7% in after-hours trading Friday after the company reported that a study of a potential breast-cancer treatment was halted because it was unlikely to achieve its goal. Pfizer said that a phase 3 study of palbociclib, also known as Ibrance, which was ongoing in 400 centers spread across 21 countries, would not reach its intended change in survival rates. "This result is not what we hoped for, but we are steadfast in our commitment to advancing the science and care for people living with breast cancer," Chief Executive Albert Bourla said in the announcement. After closing a penny higher at $38.19, shares dove lower than $35.50 in extended trading following the announcement. Pfizer stock has fallen 2.5% so far this year.

Exchange-traded funds with energy exposure sagged on Friday, but were on track to cap a month in which the sector was one of the strongest performers. Occidental Petroleum Corp. said Friday that its board of directors has declared a regular quarterly dividend of a penny a share, payable on July 15 to shareholders of record as of June 15. Friday's news was an update to the energy company's previously announced dividend policy change from March 10, in which Occidental reduced its quarterly dividend to 11 cents a share. Shares of Occidental have lost nearly 70% this year, compared with losses around 6.5% and 12% for the S&P 500 index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average in the same period. The former police officer who kept his knee on an unarmed black man's neck until he was dead in an incident captured on camera on Monday has been taken into police custody, the Minnesota Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington said on Friday. Harrington said Derek Chauvin, whose actions were videoed by bystanders, was arrested in Minneapolis. The police officer was fired along with three others who were involved in handcuffing George Floyd and pushing him to the ground. After months battling to contain the spread and impact of the coronavirus pandemic, New York City is on track to begin the first phase of reopening on June 8, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday. "We are on track to reopen on June 8," Cuomo said at his daily briefing. The city is expected to meet all necessary metrics for reopening, including hospital capacity and having a stockpile of personal protective equipment. Baker Hughes on Friday reported that the number of active U.S. rigs drilling for oil declined by 15 to 222 this week. The oil-rig count has now fallen for 11 weeks in a row, suggesting further declines in domestic crude output.
