Analyzing Search Results
What is MI Analyst™?
MI Analyst provides you with a way of refining your search, and paring down your results without editing your search query. It allows you to discover relationships between the concept areas revealed in your search results, which mitigates research barriers such as unfamiliar or unidentified concepts, synonyms, acronyms, and aliases. You can uncover relevant business issues hidden in content, identify threats and opportunities regarding products, market share, pricing, new technologies, marketing partnerships, and business strategy. You can also perform trend analysis with display and data export options.
The MI Analyst boxes, appearing on the right side of your search results page, combine the power of Northern Light's best-in-class free-text searching with advanced text analytics.
Using MI Analyst, individual concepts are extracted from your search results documents, and organized into concept areas, such as these (NOTE: list of concept areas may vary by search selection):
Global Risk Factors
Venture Funded Companies
Legal & Regulatory
Your analyzed results can be viewed in three formats: as pie charts, as bar charts, or as mentions (in a list).
Clicking on the MORE link will allow you to see more than the top five listings in each box, as well as give you the ability to sort your results alphabetically, by clicking on the Sort Alphabetically link beneath the search box.
On this page, you will also find a Trends line graph, and for each of the companies listed in the Company concept area, an Analyze Company link. More on these useful tools below.
Trends and Charts in MI Analyst
Hover your cursor over any of the concept boxes in MI Analyst, and click the more... link. Scroll down on that next page, and you will see a line graph indicating Trends of the number of actual mentions of these concepts within a time-frame of your choosing (from the past 7 days up to the past 6 quarters). This allows you to easily view content from specific periods of time, when interest in your topic was great or minimal.
You can do several things with this chart:
Toggle on/off the associated line in the chart by selecting the corresponding colored box in the list of concepts. You may also add other concepts from the results list pages, by clicking the box before it.
Hover your mouse over any data point on the trends chart to see a document count for that time period.
Click on the highlighted area that you see when you hover over a point to launch a search result from that time period.
Choose a different time period for the trends chart, excluding partial periods.
Export the information to a spreadsheet document by selecting the Export to CSV link.
NOTE: Some concept area selections, such as Companies and Venture Funded Companies, provide links to finer analysis of the organizations in question. Many of the other concept areas have an additional filter where you can further focus your search results, based upon relevant sub-categories.
How do I view the documents associated with a concept from the MI Analyst result page?
You can view the documents associated with a specific concept from the MI Analyst result page by clicking on that concept's link in any of the concept area boxes. The documents that contain that concept will be displayed in a traditional result list format. Your search will be sorted by the number of mentions of that concept in your search, but you have the option of sorting them alphabetically.
How can I sort the results returned for each concept?
If you have limited your search to a specific concept, your search will be sorted by the number of mentions of that concept in each document. You can switch to sorting by relevance to search terms, or to sorting by date, by clicking the Sort by links under the search bar.
What does the proximity drop down menu on the Concept Areas do?
Use the proximity drop down to limit your search to include only those documents where mention of the Concept Area occurs within a specified number of words from your search terms.
Proximity searching strengthens the probability of a strong relationship between your search terms and the MI Analyst Concept Area.
